Happy Birthday!

To my darling daughter, who celebrates birthday number five today:

Happy Birthday, big girl!

She had a fabulous day today, starting off with announcing to me first thing this morning: "I'm five now."  She said it feels good, for those of you wondering, and was quite excited when I wished her a happy birthday.

I had to work at the office today, but it was a short day for me, thankfully.  I missed everything up until after her nap, but she told me she had a wonderful day, so I can only assume she did.  She noticed the Melissa & Doug birthday cupcakes (which had Happy Birthday written on them with the "icing") right away and dragged Daddy out of bed for him to see them.  She also requested tonight that we safely store these cupcakes (wooden play cupcakes) so that no thief comes to take them.  Apparently there has been a rash of cupcake burglaries lately.

Daddy took her to Chuck E Cheese's for play time and lunch today.  She was excited to find she had just enough tickets for pink cotton candy, which she says tastes like strawberries and sugar for those of you wondering. She was not afraid of Chuck E this time, though she did not give him a high five as she's been promising for two years now.

She barely made it home from the house of ROUS awake and took a pretty decent nap.  When she woke up, I was already home and we were able to open presents.  As parents, we fail in the present category for birthdays since we always wait until she opens gifts from everyone else before getting her anything, but we DO take her to Toys R Us and allow her to select a toy within reason.  She was quite excited by her other presents to make up for it, though ("Oh, this is what I dreamed of getting!" and "Oh, this is what I always wanted!").  I have never loved watching any child open gifts as much as my little girl because she's positively appreciative of everything she receives. It's just adorable!

It took her some time, but she finally decided we were going to Cheesecake Factory for dinner.  She ordered the corn dogs and instead of fries requested fruit.  She managed to get two small bowls of fruit somehow instead of just one, which just tickled her to no end.  She also requested strawberry cheesecake, and when they brought it out, they had the plate decorated with her name, a candle in the cake, and a whole crew of people to sing happy birthday.  She was absolutely beaming!

All in all, I have to say this was a pretty good birthday for her.  I have to admit, it was a pretty good day for me, too.
